It is an electrical discharge between a cloud and the ground.
It usually occurs when there is a storm, the water droplets and ice in the cloud collide with each other to form negatively charged electrons, they eventually gather at the bottom of the cloud being attracted to the positively charged protons on the ground. When the electrical charge is greater than the insulating properties of the atmosphere, there is a discharge and that is what we call a lightning.
